Knocked-out tooth
A knocked-out tooth is one of the more serious dental injuries, and time matters. Tell us what happened through our secure intake form, and our team takes care of finding an appropriate dental specialist.
What it is
A knocked-out tooth (dentists call it an avulsed tooth) is a tooth that has come completely out of its socket. Knocked-out teeth are less common than other dental injuries, such as chipped teeth, but more severe. They usually happen during an accident or a sports injury.
What people usually notice
- The whole tooth, including its root, is out of the mouth.
- Pain where the tooth was.
- Other parts of the mouth, such as the lips, gums or nearby teeth, may be hurt in the same accident.
Why prompt care matters
The American Association of Endodontists says that with a knocked-out tooth, "time is of the essence." The American Dental Association notes that a quick response can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth, and both organizations advise seeing a dental professional right away.
